(More customer reviews)This has to be my favorite (non-espresso) method of producing good coffee. Vacuum brewing (often called siphon brewing) was very popular before convenience assumed more importance than the quality of coffee produced.
While lacking quite the grace and style (and "coffee-table theatre") of the Cona version, the Yama brewer carries a much smaller price tag. Though it is made of glass, the Yama feels quite sturdy and should be quite serviceable - given suitable care. If it breaks, the cost of replacement is reasonable.

The Cona has a glass rod/filter which is very effective, zero cost, and low maintenance. I do not like the idea of brewing through re-used, laundered cotton filters as provided with the Yama, so I use an old Cory glass rod filter (check out eBay) which works perfectly with my 40 oz unit. A simple wire grid is provided and works well with my electric smooth-top. The whole process soon becomes very quick and easy with practice.
Maybe I'll buy a small butane burner to achieve the Cona's "coffee-table theatre".

Brew and serve the best coffee of your life with the help of this 40-ounce coffee siphon from Northwest Glass Yama, which vacuum brews coffee on your stovetop to produce a cleaner, richer, and smoother cup of coffee. This coffee siphon (model SY-8) makes 40 ounces (8 cups) of coffee. One part performance art and one part laboratory project, the coffee siphon brews coffee by heating water stored in the bottom chamber, which is then forced to the upper vessel containing the coffee grounds. After removal from the heat, the brewed coffee will be drawn back through a strainer to the bottom chamber and ready for pouring. This model works on gas and electric rangetops, and comes with a wire diffuser for use on electric coil burners. The glass chambers are dishwasher and microwave safe.

Directions for Use
Use a slightly finer grind of coffee.
Drop the washable, reusable cloth covered filter into the infusion chamber with the chain hanging down into the glass siphon tube.
Pull the chain down until you can hook it to the bottom of the siphon tube.
Fill the bottom carafe to the 5 mark with hot water and place 5 measuring spoons of coffee in top chamber.
After about 4 minutes to heat the water, all the water is siphoned to the top chamber; allow 2 minutes to brew.
Remove from the heat source, allowing the coffee comes back down to the bottom carafe.
Remove the top, placing it in its convertible lid/stand, and bring the pot to the table for serving.

(More customer reviews)Ce n'est pas une table du tek. This is not a teak table. That said, it LOOKS like a teak table. And it costs maybe twenty percent of the cost of teak. It is made in Vietnam of a reasonable quality of wood which is stained rather well to resemble teak coloring. The 'some assembly required' involves tightening four large bolts and attaching two hooks with four wood screws. Maybe a half an hour, including getting it out of the large package it came in via FedEX.
The sixty dollar price is reasonable although the problem is not with the table when you get it. It looks good. It is sturdy. But how will it withstand weathering from rain and sun? You don't know. I suggest since it isn't teak, that you take it inside when you are not using it. It is not too heavy to carry, and it easily folds up. If you keep it on a porch or covered patio it will last far longer but not as long as teak. Nothing else outlasts teak outside.
Still I am pleased with this table and, until I feel like paying four hundred dollars or more for my next teak table it will do. In fact, the eight pieces forming the edge of the table had better joinery than my last real teak table from Indonesia. Recommended.

Left untreated, eucalyptus will weather when exposed to the elements, turning a soft shade of silver/gray similar to the weathering of teak. In addition, when untreated, natural splitting or cracks will appear, but this will not affect the durability of the furniture. To guard against this weathering process and to maintain a desired look, apply coats of a hardwood oil. The frequency of necessary oil applications depends on the intensity of the outdoor elements. The furniture has already been oiled prior to packing, and it is recommended that an oil treatment be repeated at least once a year. Giving the furniture an extra treatment before exposing to rain will prolong the "new" look and ensure a longer life.
After eucalyptus furniture has weathered, it can be restored if desired by sanding down the surface, cleaning it, and then applying oil to prevent more weathering. To clean it, mix one tablespoon of bleach, five tablespoons of a gentle dishwashing liquid, and a gallon of water, and gently scrub the mixture on the surface of the wood with a soft bristle brush. Rinse the solution from the furniture, and allow it to dry completely in the sun. Developed for use in high humidity, the furniture is best not stored in centrally heated areas, as that could lead to excessive drying out of the wood.
Wood that becomes saturated with water and left over an extended period without drying out is more likely to warp and rot. The bases of furniture legs are probably the most vulnerable when it comes to water damage. If wood furniture is kept in the grass, at the poolside, or on a surface that collects rain water, the legs can become saturated. Covering the bottoms of each leg with rubberized material or small sections of cedar fencing material will help protect furniture from rotting from the bottom up.

(More customer reviews)It's hard to tell from the picture, but the table is actually a pretty good size. We can put appetizers and drinks on the table and have plenty of space. What it also doesn't show is that it has a pre-distressed finish which is off-putting if you weren't expecting it. Very carefully placed gouges in the wood and shaved off edges. But they're all finished in the same color varnish, so it's fine by us. We like it a lot. So far no rings from glasses have marked the table and it's a nice rich warm brown color.

After thinking it over I decided to incorporate 2x6s in place of 2x4s where I could to prevent warping. 2x6 lumber fits perfect into this construction. I've attached photos above - check 2x6 construction. the 2x4 braces below make for solid shake-free benches. I sanded and finished mine with three coats of Thompsons "Honey Gold" tint Watersealant. After this summer and winter in OK I'll report back on how well these held up. All construction so far has been 6 feet long.
You have to realize it's wood you're working with and prepare accordingly. Measure to get the most of each cut from the length wood you buy. I purchased #2 Douglas Fir - it's a bit stronger than framing lumber.

My only beef is that they aren't very sturdy due to the way the legs are designed. They look great with two Tiffany lamps on the side tables. I wouldn't put anything heavier on them though for fear of it tipping over. You can't push on the coffee table to help you get up from the couch either as it will start to tip also. There are spinner feet on the bottoms of all three and they do help to lessen the wobble that they have (I have them on a carpet floor), but they are still not perfectly solidly stable. Shipping was decently fast/average. I would buy from this seller again.

So, I was happy to find this modestly sized table and was even more pleased that it exceeded my expectations. I was afraid it might be a little flimsy or cheap-looking in person, but that's not the case. No, it's not as nice as a quarter-sawn antique but it looks pretty darn good for the price. The drawers are on metal rollers that roll very smoothly and quietly, which I think is indicative of the table's quality. It was easy to assemble and came very securely packaged - no dings or chips. It's a bit on the darker side of medium oak in color. I'm pleased with it and wouldn't hesitate to buy more of this brand.

The customer service by the way was excellent in dealing with a prior shipping error. They gave me a return label, credit and reshipment immediately and with a smile I could hear over the phone.
