(More customer reviews)Unlike what the photo suggests, the entire set is black and not dark brown. This lends a versatile and contemporary look to the tables which would work well if you have modern-looking furniture. However, the black finish seems to work against the veneer pattern. The black ends up being shiny, so not only does the veneer pattern stand out but so do the natural patterns in the wood and any scratches or dings. The end result is a rough almost old-looking table. Seems like the wood could also have been sanded down more since there's still somewhat of a raw feel.
On the plus side, both the coffee table and accompanying end tables are remarkably sturdy. They are not easy to get knocked over, and they seem able to hold heavy items. I've got my computer, printer, and feet resting on the coffee table right now, and it's not budging. The coffee table is small and more suited to go in front of a loveseat--a perk if you're living in an apartment with limited space. An advantage to the black color is that the end tables can go anywhere.
Overall, I can't complain because $99 is a good deal for cheap apartment furniture. It's functional, affordable, and reasonably attractive. But there's no mistaking this for anything but low end furniture.
